Our services

HSBC has had branches in Spain since 1981. We have long-standing relationships with many Spanish domestic and multinational companies, as well as financial institutions and the public sector in both Spain and Portugal.

We provide corporate and institutional banking products to both local and overseas customers wishing to operate in Spain and Portugal.

HSBC Continental Europe is a subsidiary of HSBC Holdings plc, one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world.

Unfortunately, HSBC in Spain does not offer personal banking services and cannot provide assistance to personal banking customers from any other overseas HSBC entities.

Our history in Spain

In 1981, Midland Bank (now HSBC Bank plc) opened a full branch in Spain. The branch focused on providing corporate and commercial banking services, mainly to major Spanish businesses such as utilities; and forex and dealing services.

In 1985, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation opened its doors for business in Madrid. At the time, it was the only non-Japanese bank with a strong Asian network operating in the country.

In 1988, following HSBC’s purchase of a 14.9 per cent stake in Midland Bank, the two banks integrated many of their businesses in Europe and Asia. Midland Bank’s branch in Madrid took over many of the accounts of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’s branch.

In 1990, James Capel and Midland Montagu established a stockbroking company in Madrid. This joint venture boasted a high-quality research service and specialised in Spanish equities for clients worldwide. Representation in Spain also increased with the establishment of an office in Barcelona.

In 1995, James Capel and Midland Bank merged into one institution.

In 1996, Midland Bank moved from Edificio Beatriz to Torre Picasso.

In 1997, HSBC Investment Bank opened an office in Madrid – its services include new issues and advising on privatisations.

In 1998, the Valencia office opened for business.

In 1999, Midland Bank changed its name to HSBC Bank as part of the global rebranding campaign by HSBC.

In 2020, due to Brexit, HSBC Continental Europe is born and Spain becomes a branch of this new legal entity.

In 2021, Pablo López-Henares became CEO of HSBC in Spain.

In 2021, HSBC celebrated 40 years of business in Spain.
